Broadcast

I have not had the opportunity to have too much hands-on Broadcast experience, but I have filmed things for our social media and have a base background knowledge of terms and technical aspects, from attending conference sessions and spending a unit on it in the Journalism 1 class.

Social media promo videos

I have filmed social media promo videos for stories to go on our Instagram or other social medias. For these, I have to keep in mind lighting, framing, rule of thirds, and ensuring my filming is steady.

Broadcast unit

In my Journalism 1 class, we did a unit on Broadcast and learned about the different types of broadcast videos, and how to film them, as well as film terms and concepts like B-Roll. Here I have some of my notes.

Broadcast video

During our broadcast unit, I partnered with another student to script and shoot part of a broadcast video. We wrote out the script for the video and planned each shot, and then filmed the voiceovers and intro. Here is some of our planning.

GSPA/SIPA sessions

I have attended several broadcast conference sessions, which I have attached my notes for. At GSPA, I attended a session about the most important shots to get for every broadcast video, and how to get them. At SIPA, I attended a session that looked over the student broadcast submission for the on-site journalism competition and analyzed them. Here is a handout I got from one of those session

Separate worlds accompanying video

Although the video was not able to be finished because of COVID-19, I worked with our 2019-20 Broadcast Editor, Colin Frick, to create a broadcast to accompany my story “Separate worlds.” From discussing what interviews to get and how his video could complement my article, as well as interviewing people on film for the video, I got experience with broadcast. Here is some of our planning notes.
