Photojournalism
Throughout my time on staff, I have taken many photos to accompany stories I am working on, and shot several events, with a particular focus on rallies and activism. Photos and visuals are one of the most important aspects of journalism -- they can be used to catch the audience's eye and draw them to actually ready a story and offer important context. I have been trained in photography in our Journalism I class, and at several conferences including GSPA, SIPA, and NSPA, and have learned both the technical aspect of photography, and journalistic aspects, such as the importance of telling a story through photos.
Women's rally photos
This gallery is of a women's rights protest in downtown Athens, that I wrote event coverage of. It allowed me to gain some experience in shooting crowds, which was a bit challenging, and to engage with something I'm passionate about: women's rights.
Teach truth rally photos
I took photos at a rally about Critical Race Theory in the classroom and Black history in Athens. With the trees and shadows, it was difficult to frame photos well, but I tried to get a variety of shots that showed the action and emotion of the rally.
Profile photos
These are photos I have taken of central stakeholders in stories ranging from profiles to spotlights to news. For these photos, I work to frame the subject well, taking into account the rule of thirds and ensuring the frame is controlled, as well as placing them in context when possible.
Track photos
I took photos of the track team warming up and having practice to get experience and practice sports photography. I enjoyed the opportunity to work on taking action shots.
504/IEP story photos
For a magazine story I wrote about 504 plans and IEPs, I took photos of a Push-In Model class. I had to include the teacher in the photos, while still getting some of the students in the shot, and was able to draw on some of my previous experience shooting in classrooms.
Engaging with gender photos
Although we ended up not using my photos, for my news story “Engaging with gender” I had to get some of the pictures myself. It was the first time I’d done a larger-scale staged photo, and I had to organize a classroom of students for the shot.
Erin Bothe profile photos
I took photos of Erin Bothe, the president of the Women and Gender Studies Club, presenting at the meeting, to go with a Q&A I did of her.
SCENE at Central
For scenes, which are quick interviews with a photo and caption for our Instagram, I've taken a lot of photos of people around the school.
Photography unit
In our Journalism 1 class, we had a unit on photography, where we learned about things like elements of photo composition, how to take different types of shots like action and profile, and how to write captions. This is an example of some of the work I did during that unit.
GSPA/SIPA sessions
At SIPA and GSPA I have attended sessions about photography, including sessions with photography tips, how to get good action photos, exploring different types of photography, and a shot list of what kinds of photos you should make sure to get in a photoshoot.
Music History Photo Essay
With a team of four people, I went around to locations with significance for the music scene in Athens, and took photos and interviewed several people to make a photo essay about music history in Athens.
