Web & Social Media

As the Digital Managing Editor, the majority of my focus is the web. It is part of my duty to ensure that we post something on the web daily, to maintain a daily streak, and I also edit and approve every story that goes on our website. I post and package many of our articles, and also write stories for the web often. Timely coverage is extremely integral for the web, so I am accustomed to moving very quickly when necessary.

Breaking News: Switch to virtual

lcolemantaylor_odysseynewsmagazine.png

Our school district announced that our school would be returning to virtual learning for two days. I wrote Breaking News on this, interviewing several teachers and students to get their reactions, and confirming the information that was sent out in an email to the students and parents. I had to move fast on this one, and published it the morning after the announcement was made. Click the photo to view the story on our website.

Breaking News: New Administrator

My beat was the Clarke Central administration beat. The school announced a new administrator who would be joined the administrative team, and so I interviewed her and a teacher and wrote a news brief about it, publishing it the same day that the announcement was made.

Breaking News: Superintendent announcing retirement

Our superintendent announced that she was retiring the next year, so I made a Breaking News announcement that she was retiring, which I was able to post on the same day that I received the information about her retirement. Click on the photo to view the article.

Vaccine education

Doctors and nurses came to Clarke Central to offer student information about the COVID-19 vaccine ahead of a vaccination drive. I wrote coverage of the event, and interviewed the nurses and doctors, as well as a student who got information from them, and finished and published the story on the same afternoon as the visit.

A pledge for truth

Along with one of the members of the Digital Team, I attended a rally about critical race theory and the local civil rights movement. I interviewed seven people at the event, both attendees and organizers, and wrote a coverage about both the rally itself, and the issue it was advocating for, which I finished writing over the weekend after the Friday event. It was the first post I ever made on the website. Click on the photo to read the story on our website.

Athens Women's Rally for Unity

I did event coverage of a women’s protest that happened in Athens. The story had to be published within 24 hours of the event, so I worked fast to get it written and edited in a timely manner. I interviewed a variety of sources, including speakers, organizers, and attendees, and worked hard to create quality multimedia, including a thinglink with audio clips from each of the speakers.

A communicative community

Over the summer, I attended the Governor's Honors Program as a Communicative Arts major. I wrote a blog about the experience, which I packaged with multimedia including a slider gallery and a timeline. Click on the photo to read the story on our website.

Memories on the coast

For Memories on the coast, a story about a beach I like to visit, I worked hard to include a variety of multimedia, including an embedded google map to the location, a 360 degree photo that I took of it, and a timeline of photos that did not end up in the published piece. 7,000 miles

7,000 miles was a blog I wrote when I was in Journalism 1. It was about my relationship with a friend who had moved to Japan, and I included multimedia such as an embedded map, photos of our letters, and postcards my friend had sent me to make it stand out on the web.

Award-winning author Michael Ondaatje to visit Clarke Central

I did a preview of an author event happening at Clarke Central, which was published on the website. I had to get a variety of sources (community organizers, teachers, student attendees) and make sure everything was accurate. It was fun coverage to do and a good timely story for the website.

Voting on homecoming

I had the Advisement beat at my school, and I wrote this coverage of homecoming voting, which took place during advisement. I had to do some digging to find out who was in charge of homecoming court, but it was a quick story that offered some timely coverage for the website.

SCENE at Central

For the ODYSSEY Instagram, we collect scenes, which are a photo and caption drawn from a brief interview. Over the course of my journalist career, I’ve gathered many scenes, including five in a single afternoon at one point. They help keep my interviewing skills strong, and are a good chance to practice photography.

Social media metrics

Social media also falls under my role of Digital Managing Editor. I am in the position directly above our Social Media Coordinator, so I check in with her frequently to ensure she is meeting the metrics, and I coordinate posting with her when necessary. I also work with her to coordinate promotion for stories on our website. I have access to all of our social medias, and have posted on them upon occasion when necessary.

Social media graphics and captions

I have made graphics for our social media, and have often written captions for Breaking News, social media promos, and general posts.

Posting

I post web stories often. The majority of our web stories are posted by either me or our web master, who I work with to coordinate the posting of stories. I try to package all of my stories nicely, with pull quotes and multiple images or multimedia if possible.

Digital Staff communication

The Digital Staff has experimented with using Slack and iMessage for our messaging platform. We use messaging to check in on the status of stories, coordinate coverage with each other, coordinate posting, and figure out our posting schedule, among other things. These screenshots show a discussion of a story that Digital Staff members were writing, and a conversation about a possible widget we could add to our website.
